Trip Destination
Whanganui River Delta
Experience the thrill of wading into the waters of the Whanganui River Delta for a unique fly-fishing adventure. This spot, known for its tranquil setting and excellent trout fishing, is ideal for anglers who prefer getting into the water rather than fishing from a boat.
We’ll head to the delta’s shoreline, where you can wade into the shallows with your fly rod in hand, casting into prime fishing waters. The Whanganui River Delta is particularly productive when the trout are actively feeding, especially during the early morning or late evening when conditions are just right.
Imagine standing knee-deep in crystal-clear waters, your fly gently drifting in the current, waiting for that exhilarating moment when a fish strikes. With each cast, the anticipation builds, and when a brown or rainbow trout finally takes the fly, the excitement is unmatched.
Brown trout here are robust and often exceed 2kg, with plenty of feisty rainbows also on the prowl. The key is positioning yourself in the right part of the current and patiently working the drop-off zones where these fish hold.
The delta’s natural beauty, with its panoramic lake views and peaceful atmosphere, makes it an ideal spot to perfect your fly-fishing technique.
