Trip Destination
Tauranga-Taupō River Delta
Launching from either Motuoapa or Tokaanu at the southern end of Lake Taupō, we’ll venture out to fish straight from the boat in one of the most productive spots on the lake—the Tauranga-Taupō River Delta. Known for its excellent fishing, especially during the peak spawning runs in autumn and winter, this delta offers an exciting mix of both brown and rainbow trout.
The experience of casting your fly into the pristine waters of the delta, feeling the tension build as you wait for that strike, and then battling a powerful trout is something every angler should experience! Hamish is eager to share his in-depth knowledge of fly fishing to ensure your time on the water is both enjoyable and educational.
We’ll position the boat as close as possible to the river mouth’s drop-off, where the current is strong and the trout are actively feeding, giving you the best shot at landing a trophy catch. Brown and rainbow trout here generally weigh in around 2kg, with rainbows being more commonly caught. Depending on the conditions, anglers can also target trout in the Tauranga-Taupō’s pools or tributaries, which are especially productive after rainfall.
While fishing in the delta is rewarding year-round, it truly comes alive during the evening and just after dark when the trout are on the move. Fly fishing here offers a challenging yet fulfilling adventure, suitable for both beginners and seasoned anglers. The calm waters, surrounded by stunning natural scenery, make this spot perfect for a memorable day out with family or friends.
