The Rotorua region is famous for its large Trout due to an abundance of food sources such as smelt and Koura (small freshwater crayfish). For this reason, Lake Rotoiti Trout average out at around 2kg.
Lake Rotoiti itself is a beautiful lake set in the heart of the Nelson Lakes National Park and is renowned for its trout fishing. Our boat fishing guided trip will take you to all the best spots on the lake where you are sure to catch a big one!
Fun fact: The lake was formed by an eruption that cause the cone of the volcano to explode forming a caldera, which eventually filled with fresh water.
Trout are annually released into Lake Rotoiti to ensure that it stays bountiful for trout fishing. The northern shoreline is bush clad and has steep cliffs that rise directly out of the water making for a breathtaking backdrop to your fishing trip with us here at Mr Fishing Adventures. The southern shore of Lake Rotoiti is amazing for fly fishing, as anglers are able to find trout right off the shoreline. The bag limit is 8 trout per person and lures that are recommended are Pheasant tail nymphs, Cicada dry flies, Fuzzy Wuzzy wet flys and Tasmanian devil spinners.
