As the largest lake in the southern hemisphere with a surface area of 616 KM square, Lake Taupo’s elevated volcanic position allows for cold clean water, producing well conditioned large Trout. Add to this an abundant variety of trout food such as smelt and Koura (small freshwater crayfish), Lake Taupo’s Rainbow and Brown trout weigh in at an average of 1.4 kg. Lake Taupo
Although Lake Taupo gets up to 185 meters deep, it has excellent shoreline fishing and many stream mouths, perfect in the warmer months as the trout congregate in the shallow water.
The most popular method for trout fishing in Lake Taupo aside from Fly Fishing is trolling, this involves using either a leadline, wireline or by using downriggers to troll the deeper levels of the lake.
Lake Taupo is also popular for night fishing as the brown trout begin spawning on dark in the summer months and are popularly caught with a large wet fly swung downstream into the bigger pools or at the start of river and stream mouths.
