Trip Destination
The Western Bays
Leaving before dark from Kinloch, 20 minutes from Taupo we will be fishing one of the many Western Bay stream mouths that flow into Lake Taupo. Night-time fly fishing can be epic, especially on a calm, clear night!
You have a huge choice of streams for this location to try out all angling techniques. Fly fishing in the Omori mouth requires a floating line, whereas the Kuratau river mouth is safe to wade in and is a top spot for harling. As is customary with the central plateau, the Western Bays are incredibly scenic and make for a stunning location for fly fishing. Ask your Skipper to take you home the long way round to take in the mountain vistas before digging into your world-class trout for dinner.
The best time to fly fish in the Western Bays is from October through to April. The water temperatures are cooler during this period and the fish are more active. Fly fishing during the day can be very productive, particularly early morning and late afternoon when the fish tend to feed more actively.
Some of the best fly fishing spots in the Western Bays include:
– Omori Mouth
– Kuratau River Mouth
– Tongariro River Mouth
– Whanganui River Mouth
– Rangitikei River Mouth
