Trip Destination
Waihora River Delta
The Waihora River Delta offers an immersive fly fishing experience for anglers keen to wade into the water and get close to the action. This spot is perfect for those who love the thrill of fishing while being surrounded by the serenity of the central North Island’s natural beauty. Anglers can cast from the shallows, positioning themselves right in the current where trout congregate near the drop-off.
Wading in with fly rods in hand, you’ll feel the excitement build as you wait for that first strike on your line. The combination of skill, patience, and connection with nature makes this experience unforgettable. Hamish will be on hand to guide you through the best techniques, whether you’re targeting feisty rainbows or the elusive browns that move through the delta.
The average catch here is around 2kg, with rainbow trout being the predominant species. Timing your trip just right can make all the difference, and at the Waihora Delta, the magic often happens in the low light of early morning or near dusk. As you cast into the rippling currents, the chance of hooking a trophy trout is high—especially when fishing close to the river mouth where the larger fish tend to cruise.
The location is perfect for all skill levels, from beginners learning to master their first cast to seasoned anglers refining their techniques. The calm yet challenging waters offer ample opportunities to test your abilities and make each catch even more rewarding.
