Trip Destination
Tongariro Delta River
We launch at either Motuopa or Tokaanu, towards the southern end of Lake Taupo. We’ll head off to angle straight off the boat. The Tongariro Delta is an amazing spot to fish either during the day or after dark when the brown trout migrate upstream.
Nothing beats gearing up with fly rods in tow and eagerly waiting on the freshwaters of the delta for the perfect catch! The anticipation of that initial strike on your fly, then reeling it in, is a unique experience that everyone should try! Hamish is sure to share his knowledge on all things fly fishing to make your trip truly unique.
We’ll position the boat in the current as close as we can get to the drop-off of the river mouth for the best possible opportunity of taking home a trophy-sized trout.
Brown and Rainbow trout in the Delta average at about 2kg, with Rainbow trout being the most prevalent caught. Fly fishers also have the chance to fish out of the Tongariro pools depending on rainfall in the area. Although the fishing is amazing in this spot all year round, the best time in this location is right on dark.
Fly fishing is a challenging but rewarding sport that can be enjoyed by the young and old from all walks of life. The Tongariro Delta provides the perfect setting to either learn or perfect your skills. With its calm waters and plentiful fish, the delta is the ideal backdrop for a day out fishing with mates or family.
